Pinterest SEO: use Pinterest to improve rankings

Pinterest is a new popular kid on the block of social media tools. As with many other social media profiles you get a profile page. In my case it’s pinterest.com/zagoumenov. You can put this URL on you new business cards if you wish to connect your online and offline community. However, this article is about search engine optimization and how Pinterest can help your SEO.
Pinterest SEO: Search engine visibility
First of all, on in the Edit Profile screen, make sure your profile is not hidden from search engines. The wording is a bit tricky here but make sure that it says OFF to “Hide your Pinterest profile from search engines”. This will ensure your profile appears in Google.
Pinterest SEO: Your website address
With Pinterest profile you get an option to link back to your website, blog or any other profile of your choice. This will give you a link back from pinterest.com. At this point (March 3, 2012) the link is followed, meaning that the pinterest.com domain juice is being passed to your website.
Also note that you can still link to an internal page. Many social profiles only link to a homepage, not internal pages. Linking to internal pages such as Website Review vs. my homepage is desired in many cases.
Pinterest SEO: You “About” section
This text section acts as a description of your profile and is likely to be used (partly) in a search snippet in Google. Make sure your description includes 2-3 of your business interests (as keywords). Don’t overdo on the length, 150 characters should be plenty. This will help make the page relevant in Google when people search for your niche terms. Same goes for Pinterest internal search (still needs to be tested though).
Pinterest SEO: Associate with social media profiles
As Google and the web overall becomes more connected it’s important to let Pinterest (and Google) know about your profiles on Facebook and Twitter. Make sure you connect these profiles in the Edit Profile section on Pinterest.
These are based on the first glance at the new Pinterest profile and how it affects your search engine optimization efforts. Make sure you follow the above directions and you’ll benefit from this profile SEO-wise. Also, let me know if you think there’s more SEO opportunities with Pinterest.

Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!

Hi Alex! I just watched a bunch of youtube tutorials and then “requested an invite” from Pinterest. I was really surprised to see there was a waiting list!! How long did it take you to
get on? Do you think they just do this to make ot seem more exclusive? Oh brother!
Jacqueline! Thanks for stopping by. It wasn’t long, if I recall correctly, it was a day or so. You might be right on the reason they’re doing it. But another reason is when a new product is launched and when it’s as popular as Pinterest there’s a technical need to control scaling. Gradual growth prevents their servers from overloading and allows to spot and fix bugs as they come in. If you recall, Google did this same thing with gmail and for probably both of these reasons. Now you can register a gmail account without any invitations and waiting lists. Hope that clarifies things a bit. Chat soon!
CharlesSSauer, thanks for a great comment, very valuable!
I’ve used pinterest to optimize my site and the result was amazing my site was jumped from #234 to #9 in few weeks time. The trick is we must got our website pinned and repinned by many people this is the hardest part. Most of pinterest users won’t doing repin when they aren’t like what we pinned. I do simple thing to outsource it on fiverr and got my site pinned by more than 70 people, I don’t know how can he did it just search by typing pinterest on fiverr and you will find it.
As I know currently pinterest is best for SEO for these reason:
1. Once our website pinned it has 3 backlinks counts
2. Google interest in social media signal so it will not tagged as links farm
3. Currently pinterest links are dofollow even the image
4. Also support anchor text, it’s perfect for placing our keywords
Rahul, thank you for your comment. I’m looking forward to new developments with Pinterest. Please, feel free to share your experience with this network tool too.
Loving pinterest lately. No doubt, it’s the “hottest” website of 2012 and it’s already a hit! Not just in one way, it’s useful to almost every kind of people
